The votes are in and we can reveal that youth radio is the hero of this quarter’s RAJAR results.
While Kiss posted its biggest ever national figures at over 5 million weekly reach, Capital has been crowned the UK’s biggest commercial radio brand with 7.7 million listeners.

From Monday 7th October London’s Choice FM makes way fro Global’s latest brand, Capital Extra.
Choice FM has been part of London’s radio dial for 18 years, even taking on a Birmingham license for some time.

Westwood Joins Choice FM

The end of an era for the BBC has proved to be an exciting new chapter for Global’s Choice FM.
Radio’s hip hop music pioneer announced his new weekly show on the station begins this Saturday (21st September) at 9pm.

Rajar Round Up Q2 2013

So a quick snapshot of how UK radio has fared in the Q2 RAJAR stats….
 
Absolute Radio saw great gains adding 590,000 listeners taking its total to 3.8 million. Absolute’s London service was up 10% year on year but the big story is digital station Absolute 80’s which has posted record figures of 1.17 million making it the biggest all digital commercial radio station.

We’re lucky enough to be part of the Internet Advertising Bureau’s Online Audio Council. At the most recent event Audiencenet shared the results of their research into listening habits for all audio.

Radio has had the steady hand of RAJAR to generate its audience research and the RAB for further industry insight and being always curious to the habits of the listening population we were keen to see how much similarity and difference would be found from existing research.

Apple Announces iTunes Radio

The highly anticipated iTunes Radio has been announced with a primary launch in the US.

Although the name suggests a content driven radio service, it is in fact much more akin to the streaming services already popluar with music fans such as Spotify and Last FM.

Young People Communicate with Radio

Following last week's RAJAR the story being leapt upon is Grimshaw's fall from grace. Radio 1's new(ish) Breakfast host saw a terrific drop in listeners seeing it fall to its 2003 levels, the station overall has lost 1.3 million in the past 12 months. Having been tasked by the BBC Trust to reduce the average age of the listener, further insight to sadden the R1 team is that the only demographic to grow audience was the 55+ age bracket from 1.3% to 1.6%.

RAJAR have published the quarterly radio listening figures. LIstening via DAB is ever increasing, up again to 34.3% of all radio listening.

Sony Gold for Commercial Radio

The annual radio 'oscars' - the Sony Awards took place in London last night. 

The Saturdays and Robbie Williams both gave performances to the celeb filled crowd with Chris Evans hosting this year's event at Grosvenor House.

Aerial Awards Return

As part of the RAB's push to improve the creativity of radio advertising in the UK the Aerial Awards have been refreshed and relaunched. 

Commercials approved by the advertiser and on air within the past calendar month are eligible for entry. Emer Stamp and Ben Tollett from Adam&Eve/DDB will be the first judges of the awards.

Happy Embargoed Day

The way that radio is measured intrigues me. RAJAR is the official body for measuring both commercial and BBC radio in the UK. The current method involves residents from selected postcodes within licensed transmission areas being solicited to complete diaries that follow their radio listening over a set time period. This information is collated and upscaled to give the average of listeners and hours listened for each station within that area.

For such progressive times it seems an archaic system, but research into other methods has so far proved unreliable.

Radio is Great for Snow Days

Every time a blanket of snow sweeps the country our inner child escapes. Reminders of a youthful era when you'd tune into local radio in the morning to hear your school's name called out as a closure for the day. I remember the privilege I felt in my early radio career when I was informed of the SNOWDAY password that schools had to provide when calling with their closure notice so that mischevious pupils didn't attempt sabotage!

Even in this digital age with Twitter being the fastest way to update people there really is nothing like radio to reflect the mood of the country at a time of collective disruption.

Laughing At Others

We’ve been asked a number of times for our opinion on the 2Day radio call.

No one could have predicted the terribly sad outcome for Jacintha Saldanha.

Especially the presenters at 2Day, who did not expect their call to be put through and initially became the source of envy amongst other presenters who wish they’d scored the scoop and then pity for the burden of their responsibility in this sad circumstance.

Whilst there has been widespread shock followed by condemnation for the presenters from 2Day it’s been somewhat overlooked that pranks are a very strong part of  ‘entertainment’ seen in broadcasting and many more grotesque pranks have continue to gain popularity this week.

It's RAJAR day, which for  non-radio people means very little. RAJAR is the quarterly measurement of radio listening and on the publishing of results soon follows the craftily spun press releases. Nobody is ever a loser, there are gains in share where there are losses in reach or gains in year on year where there are losses on quarter. 

But amongst the usual big stories about who's leading London commercially and will Chris Evans ever emulate Terry Wogan's successful audience highs - is the news of Absolute Radio's drive in digital listening

The Year to Remember Forgets TV and Press

This, as we are regularly reminded will be the year to remember. The much hyped London 2012 Olympic Games have arrived in the same year that England qualified for the Euros and therefore advertising revenues should be revitalised. I recall reading that the year England failed to qualify was estimated to have cost the British economy £1b a good proporation of which would be the advertising spend for the accompaniements that we expect with big footballing fixtures, TV's, Cars, alcohol and takeaways (the irony of watching world class sportmen while enjoying a double pepperoni deep pan and a few bottles of larger!)

Award season is upon us! The Sony's celebrated UK radio just last week (more on that later) but first, we're delighted to have been shortlisted for an Institute of Internal Communications Award. 

Alongside their agency Logistik we worked to create bespoke in-house radio shows for Marks and Spencer's internal communications department for their various business strands.

Creating Internal Communications media is proving to be an ever increasing demand from our clients and this year could be especially interesting as we see more people having to adjust their working patterns and practices to account for the impact that the Olympics will have, especially in the capital.
